Abstract

Aim: to investigate the meaning and occupational form of high-risk pregnancy in the hospital context. Methodology: This is a descriptive and exploratory study, with a qualitative approach. 10 women classified as high-risk pregnant participated, admitted to a maternal and child hospital in the state of Pará, Brasil. For data collection, a sociodemographic characterization form and semi-structured interview were used. Data were treated using the Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires (IRaMuTeQ) and content analysis. Results: The meaning of occupations underwent changes due to the clinical condition and the hospital context, with positive and negative connotations, such as the satisfaction of gestating, in addition to fear due to the risks and the possibility of an unfavorable outcome during pregnancy. There were limitations and barriers in the occupational form, evidencing changes and even an inability to perform daily life activities, instrumental activities of daily living, rest and sleep, and social participation. Conclusion: The forms of coping reported involved support through spirituality and the health care received. Occupational significance and form are affected by high-risk pregnancy and hospitalization, which generates an occupational imbalance. The development of new research with this population is recommended, and which contemplate other contexts such as ambulatory and home. In addition to studies that evaluate occupational therapeutic assistance in obstetrics.
