Reburial of human bodies in the salitrero Lagunas cemetery (Tarapaca Region, Northern Chile). An ethical proposal in the context of environmental impact

Abstract

The fortuitous discovery of human remains associated with a former saltpeter (nitrate) administrative site in northern Chile required the development of an interdisciplinary work plan for their treatment and final disposition. This article discusses the criteria used for conservation, bioanthropological analysis and, finally, the reburial of every identified individual. A central objective of this project was the ethical treatment and conservation of human remains, in environmental impact activities, which constitutes an innovative proposal in a local context. This process has revealed the inexistence of national protocols concerning the conservation of bioanthropological remains prior to their reburial. This reflects the need to develop new standards that are more in line with communities’ cultural values and expectations.
